Our Consulting and Engineering Services Department, part of our Professional Services Business Unit, has a tremendous opportunity for an Engineering Technician. This technical position involves coatings engineering-related services including site specific condition evaluations of coatings and substrates, as well as the development of opinions of probable cost and maintenance painting strategies for major facilities and government organizations. Coating assessments are performed by visual examination and testing as well as by remotely operated aerial and underwater drones. Coating repair recommendations, comprehensive technical reports, and written opinions are routinely provided as part of the above-mentioned services. This position requires 25% - 50% travel and will be based in Pittsburgh, PA at our headquarters near the Pittsburgh International airport.
This unique position requires the ability to balance and prioritize the demands of multiple clients and projects, become well versed in standards when required, and to develop autonomy skills as a new engineer begins developing their acumen.
Within 12 months you will have developed the skills to effectively perform or engage in the following:
- Perform Coating [industrial painting] and Integrity condition assessments on structures, ranging from bridges, water towers, pipelines, compressor stations, and more.
- Work under industry veterans, including with the guidance of a professional engineer, should you wish to pursue your Professional Engineering licensure.
- Write and peer review technical reports, employing strong technical writing and editing skills.
- Produce construction/remediation estimates [opinions of probable costs] related to coating system maintenance strategies, structural demands, and established standards, such as those set forth by the AWWA.
- Gain familiarity reading blueprints, engineering drawings, Process & Instrumentation diagrams, conduct surface area calculations, and engage in higher mathematical requirements whenever required.
- Review abrasive blasting containment shop drawings and calculations for conformance to industry and/or project-specific contract documents.
- Develop work proposals (scope of services, staffing, costs) alongside KTA peers and experienced proposal developers.
- Enhance KTA’s industry presence through technical papers, presentations, and general networking.

Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, Materials, Mechanical or a related Engineering field.
EIT (newly known as EI (Engineer Intern) certificate) with a plan to obtain the Professional Engineer (PE) license in the future.
AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) Certified Coating Inspector or Protective Coatings Specialist (PCS) certification and/or corrosion and coatings chemistry knowledge.
First Aid / CPR Certification
OSHA 10-Hour Certification

Key Requirements
Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technologies
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (motor vehicle check will be conducted)
Physical Requirements:
Adequate eyesight with or without corrective lenses, including depth perception.
Ability to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Ability to climb ladders and ascend stairs, as high as 500+ feet (most commonly 200 feet max).
Ability to traverse and walk on uneven terrain, while wearing PPE, and carrying measurement equipment.
Willingness to travel (25-50% of the time)
Required to perform fieldwork outside
Able to lift 50+ pounds
Comfortable working within “Confined Spaces” as defined by OSHA
Capable of entering through smaller entrances, frequently limited to 24 inches in diameter.
