Description

As an essential member of the museum’s leadership team, the Milton Fine Curator of Art is charged with building upon Andy Warhol’s life, art, and legacy through exhibitions, publications, and public programs.  Working collaboratively across the organization, the Curator will effectively team with Learning and Public Engagement; Exhibitions; Collections, Registration, Archives, Performing Arts and Public Programming; and senior leadership to plan and implement a comprehensive vision for the museum’s curatorial endeavors.  With a total collection of more than 7,000 two dimensional pieces of art, 100 sculptures, over 400 films, hours of audio recordings, and nearly 500,000 archival objects and ephemera, one of the Curator’s primary roles is to provide a framework for understanding and connecting to Warhol through the curation of internal exhibitions, installations, and public art across the museum campus.  In addition, they will contribute curatorial insights and partnership for external exhibitions, programming, and events.  Alongside the Director of the Museum, the Curator will support connecting the museum and Advisory Board to a larger network of artists, galleries, and museums locally, nationally, and internationally.

 

QUALFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • An advanced graduate degree is required, as is a minimum of five years of museum experience.
  • The candidate must be an expert in contemporary art and have an in-depth knowledge of Andy Warhol, his life and his times—as well as a commitment to stewarding his legacy.
  •  They should have a strong exhibition, publishing, and touring background, preferably on a national and/or international stage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • The Curator must have a successful track record of curatorial achievement in the areas of exhibitions and publications, along with an understanding of the principles and practices of audio-visual collections care and management.
  • Must have strong collaborative, interpersonal and problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to be an effective leader, motivator, and team member.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  •  Must be eager to assume a role within the local community, and within the national and international art world.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and basic office equipment is required.
  • This position will be expected to gain proficiency with TMS and NetX, the museum’s collections and digital asset management software, and to have familiarity with project management systems like Basecamp.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, and stand for varying periods of time, and to travel nationally and internationally, are required. 
  • Ability to handle works of art, up to 25 lbs.
  • Moderate travel is expected.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Curatorial Strategy & Vision

  1. As a member of the leadership team, the Milton Fine Curator of Art plays a key role in determining the strategic direction of the museum’s exhibition program, including considering the overall balance/mix of exhibitions, evaluating proposed temporary exhibitions and long-term installations of the permanent collection, as well as related interpretation strategies and publications. They will establish a multi-year strategy for the development of the Museum’s program of temporary exhibitions and exhibitions of the permanent collection that further explore Warhol and related artists, with input and support from Archives, Collections, Learning and Public Engagement (LPE), and Performing Arts and Public Programming. Curated exhibitions may be available for touring to other venues, as well.
  2. Contribute to a vision for and leadership of The Warhol’s exhibition strategy and multidisciplinary curatorial program aligned to the museum’s strategic plan. This includes the development of an ongoing plan for major exhibitions that strikes a balance between local, national, and global coverage; the articulation of a holistic program narrative; revenue development and fundraising; and community engagement.
    • Review proposals for exhibitions by curators and guest curators and provide support and mentorship to ensure projects are well situated within the arc of The Warhol’s program and successfully realized.
    • Curate and oversee original and compelling exhibitions that productively question assumptions about art, culture, and society that engage and expand audiences.
    • Collaboratively contributes to original Warhol exhibition/s annually for presentation at the museum and at other venues through the museum’s traveling exhibition program.
    • Participates in the museum’s regular Exhibitions Planning meeting alongside team members from Learning and Public Engagement; Exhibitions; Collections, Registration, Archives, Performing Arts and Public Programming to weigh in on gallery rotations, programming, internal exhibitions, and external exhibitions that are part of the museum’s traveling exhibition loan program (Note: This program is under the direction of the Director of Collections and Registration).

 

Publications, Research, Programming, and Educational Materials 

  1. The Milton Fine Curator of Art, alongside colleagues in Archives, LPE, and Publications, will contribute to the development of publications and original research that plays a significant role in the Museum’s credibility, reputation, and reach.  A lively publications program will enhance scholarly discourse and aid the general public’s experience with works of art, be they in the permanent collection or in special exhibitions.  The creation of original research is essential for the Museum to continue its role as the central hub for the study of Andy Warhol’s life, art, and legacy.
  2. The curator will add intellectual capacity to The Warhol’s efforts in this area. While print publications are dependent, in part, on additional funding, The Warhol’s web site creates a platform to broadly disseminate content that can reach and engage scholarly, public, and educational audiences.  Digital content complements exhibitions on other digital sources, such as the Bloomberg Digital Guide.
  3. In collaboration with LPE and public programming team members, they will contribute to the development of educational materials and community engagement objectives (e.g. providing lectures, programs, and arts leadership).
  4. In addition, the Curator, Museum Director, and Director of Collections and Exhibitions will work together to establish national and international collaborations (whether short or long term) that increase the visibility and credibility of the Museum’s exhibition programs.
  5. Collaboratively design and build programming onsite, offsite, and across digital platforms to supported curated exhibitions. Museum Director has final approval of all exhibitions and reinstallations of the collection.

 

Collections

  1. The Milton Fine Curator of Art will provide information and recommendations to the museum’s Collections Committee, which is stewarded by the Director of Collections and Exhibitions.  The curator will play an important role in identifying opportunities to strengthen the museum’s permanent collection, as well as collectors and donors whose resources might be brought to bear on these needs. 
  2. Support Collections staff in upholding their policies and procedures relating to the care, preservation, and management of the collection; help bring the curatorial departments into alignment with the support departments for large-scale projects such as storage renovation and reinstallations of the collection.
  3. Contribute to and support the Board’s Collections Committee which is responsible for the policies and procedures relating to the care, preservation, and management of the collection.
  4. Advises and consults with the Museum Director, chair of Collections Committee, and Director of Collections and Exhibitions on proposed acquisitions and deaccessions, collecting plans, and other collections-related issues; Director has final approval of all collections-related decisions

 

Fundraising 

  1. The Milton Fine Curator of Art will aid the museum in identifying, entertaining and maintaining relationships with our donors and supporters.  Momentum on all of the activities described above will open up new channels of earned and contributed revenue, locally, nationally, and internationally.

 

Leadership, Management, & Ambassadorship

  • Actively seek to advance the exhibitions program by facilitating contacts with other museums/partners.
  • Contribute to professional organizations and events, such as conferences and art fairs, to continue to broaden The Warhol’s visibility and build its reputation.
  • Build and grow relationships with artist, curators, institutions, and leaders within the Pittsburgh region, in addition to regional, national, and international organizations to develop partnerships that will resonate with both local and national audiences.
  • Participate in the cultivation of donors and general fundraising activities to benefit acquisition, publication, exhibition, and other collection-based programs.
  • May recommend acquisitions through gifts and purchase to the Director, Collections Committee, Collections team, and Board.
  • Introduce programs and write original scholarly essays and articles.
  • Contribute to museum-wide interpretation efforts by creating and developing materials (through digital media, brochures, labels, and wall text) and experiences that are artist-centered and support audiences in having meaningful connections with the Warhol—in collaboration with LPE and public programming colleagues.
  • Consistently look to innovate and introduce new processes and working methods to The Warhol to improve and foster a positive and evolving culture of experimentation and discovery.
  • Participate in taskforces and internal groups for AWM and Carnegie Museums.
