Description
The Manager, Camps & Public Experiences is responsible for the development and implementation of team vision, goals, and strategies aimed at providing the highest quality guest experience in programs offered through camps, classes, workshops, sleepover events, adult programs, and other public programs. Duties include managing program delivery staff and coordinating facility resources with other Museum departments and divisions. Duties will include working on weekends and evenings when programs are scheduled.
Manager, Camps & Public Experiences is a creative, entrepreneurial, detail-oriented, and budget-conscious leader with experience in developing and managing educational programs or public events. The successful applicant will be adaptable, resilient, insightful, innovative, and relationship-driven with a desire to seek new business opportunities for the department and seek out internal and external partnerships.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional experience involving youth program facilitation, program management, and curriculum development are required.
- A degree in Education, STEM, museum studies and/or classroom teaching experience is preferred.
- Experience maintaining program quality and vision in a complex and changing environment is preferred.
- Experience supervising employees is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Requires a highly organized individual who can manage, develop, and support a team to achieve a shared vision.
- Knowledge of education best practices and ideas for innovative science learning experiences.
- Ability to manage complex tasks in a dynamic environment is essential.
- Candidates must have effective communication skills.
- Candidates must be able to work independently and demonstrate good judgement.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Job is primarily mobile in nature.
- Programs involve full mobility and require one to be able to lift about 20 pounds.
- Position works with foods processed in facilities with nuts, eggs, and dairy products.
- Chemicals vary by program.
- Must attend safety trainings regularly and be current on SDS compliance.

PROGRAMMATIC
- Collaborate with colleagues and leadership in development and execution efforts for overall programming strategy of camps and public experiences at Kamin Science Center (KSC), working to provide audiences with the highest quality programs and maximizing revenue opportunities.
- Organize, maintain and modify educational and safety materials.
- Create highly effective, accessible, and enjoyable experiences for all participants with the goal of increasing awareness of science and technology concepts, regional innovation, and/or STEM related careers.
- Schedule, supervise, and motivate program delivery staff who conduct various programs, working directly with the guests, to ensure program quality and excellent guest service.
- Communicate directly with guests when needed, providing information, participant updates, and resolving concerns and challenging situations.
FINANCIAL
- Assist in the development of annual budget; work within budget to ensure programs achieve the highest level of quality while meeting or positively exceeding revenue and expense goals.
COLLABORATIVE
- Work with the Marketing department to provide program descriptions, responding to information requests and monitoring presentations performed to ensure that program goals and objectives are achieved.
- Identify opportunities to develop collaborative programming opportunities with the other components of Carnegie Museums: Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Andy Warhol Museum.
- Coordinate with creative and community partners to develop and promote programs.
- Develop, maintain, and deepen relationships with related external organizations, such as colleges and universities, industry trade associations, cultural organizations, and others.
GENERAL MANAGER-LEVEL LEADERSHIP
- Actively seek professional growth opportunities and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, techniques, and applications within both the science/technology field and the museum/guest experience field to grow professionally and to ensure and improve the relevance, quality, and effectiveness of all departmental programs and priorities.
- Represent KSC at internal and external meetings to champion KSC’s overall mission and activities.
- At all times, uphold KSC’s Four Keys of Operation: Safety, Courtesy, The Experience, and Efficiency; interact with all colleagues in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with KSC Community Norms.
- Serve at all times as an exemplary advocate for and model of KSC’s values and demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and accessibility efforts at the museum.
- Intentionally look for and foster opportunities to collaborate with other KSC departments and/or Carnegie Museums components to eliminate programmatic silos and create a holistic guest experience.
- Manage execution of any external contracts and maintain documentation of work, payments, and document compliance.
- Provide “front line” support, as needed, over the course of the year during times of peak visitation (e.g. holidays, special events, STEM competitions, etc.)
- Maintain basic departmental responsibilities (timely email, phone, communication; calendar management; regular availability for meetings between 9:00am and 4:00pm Monday-Friday); etc.
- Perform other activities as required by Director’s Office.
