Description
The Informatics Assistant is responsible for maintaining the digital systems that support the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s collections and scientific research. Serves as the Department of Science point person for EMu and any other Collections Management Systems or Digital Asset Management Systems adopted by the museum. Assists Science staff in managing all science-related datasets and media. This position is part-time, up to 20 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year degree in computer science, information systems, or related field.
- Experience working with natural history museum collection datasets.
- Experience with back-end administration of museum Collections Management Systems (such as EMu, Arctos, or Symbiota).
- Experience with development and administration of web database applications using HTML, CSS, or Javascript; a server-side programming language or framework such as PHP, Python, or ASP.NET; and a database management system such as mySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience setting up and maintaining virtual web servers.
- Experience with Microsoft Access and Microsoft 365/Office.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience using APIs to retrieve and submit data.
- Experience creating and optimizing queries and indexes using SQL.
- Experience with ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online.
- Experience with Asana or similar work management software such as Jira, Trello, Microsoft Planner. etc.
- Experience with Crystal Reports.
- Experience with Digital Asset Management Systems (such as NetX or Acquia DAM).
- Experience migrating large databases between different systems or applications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of museum, archive, and science related data standards such as Darwin Core, Latimer Core, Audiovisual Core (previously Audubon Core), EAD, and ISAD(G).
- Knowledge of text processing and data cleaning methods, such as use of regex or OpenRefine.
- Knowledge of accessibility and ADA standards related to web or database applications.
- Knowledge of XML and XSLT.
- Familiarity with database design, modeling, and normalization concepts.
- Familiarity with creating and administering database backups, restores, and security
configurations. - Familiarity with DNA-related data and data formats such as FASTA, FASTQ, BAM, and AB1.
- Familiarity with geospatial-related data and data formats such as KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, and SHP.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including ability to create technical documentation and instruct nontechnical users.
- Ability to prioritize and work independently with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Works with Carnegie Museums Information Technology (IT) and Axiell support to administer CMNH's installation of EMu and related services. This includes providing front-line support to CMNH EMu users and forwarding issues to IT or Axiell as appropriate.
- Collaborates with IT to ensure CMNH informatics tools, systems, hardware, and workflows are aligned with IT policies and protocols for security and sustainability.
- Assists with needed preparations for migrating selected collections data to one or more Collections Management Systems, including working with sections on data clean-up and standardization.
- Assists with needed preparations for migrating collections media to a Digital Asset Management System.
- Trains staff in the use of Collections Management Systems and Digital Asset Management Systems.
- Supports the DCCA in the use of a Collections Management System to track and manage collection-related transactions such as acquisitions and loans.
- Assists the DCCA with documenting informatics projects and maintenance plans.
- Provides technical support to staff for collection data publication to aggregators such as iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Informatics Facility).
- In collaboration with IT, sets up and maintains virtual web servers for internal (non-public) tools and services as needed.
- In collaboration with IT, sets up and maintains virtual web servers for hosting public collection and archive databases. This includes maintaining server security and back-up services.
- Builds and maintains public web database applications related to museum collections and archives.
- Ensures accessibility and ADA compliance for any public interfaces to collection and archive databases.
- All other duties as assigned.
