Description

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Coordinator works closely with the Curators and Collection Managers of the Section of Anthropology at Carnegie Museum of Natural History to assist with documentation, and consultation on NAGPRA-eligible cultural material in the anthropology collection. The NAGPRA Coordinator will be required to perform some administrative duties. As an emerging professional, this candidate is expected to learn and grow in the position. 

This is a temporary, part-time position expected to begin January 2026 and run for twenty months. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, or a comparable subject, or a bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience working in a museum collection.
  • Strong background in Archaeology preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, including OneDrive, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as with Internet-based research.
  • Prior knowledge of NAGPRA and a desire to learn more about NAGPRA regulations and protocols preferred
  • Initiative to undertake and complete tasks and projects as they arise with little supervision required
  • Strong research and analytical skills, ability to work collaboratively and collegially with staff required
  • Candidate must be highly organized and able to work both independently and as a productive member of a team
  • Prior experience working with collection or archives materials in a museum, library, university, or lab preferred
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to propose creative solutions preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Job requires the ability to lift up to 30lbs, climb ladders, move objects from one location to another across concrete floors.
  •  Assemble shelving units that require some overhead lifting and tool use.
  • Work in an indoor environment with cool climate conditions.
  • Create and apply labels to objects.
  • Sit in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time, and speak publicly

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNATBILITIES:

  • Work with Collection Managers and Curators to ensure the proper care and curation of the Anthropology Collection and to help maintain the efficiency of NAGPRA responsibilities and compliance.
  • Assist in collections management (cataloging, storing, collecting, keeping records).
  • Research points of contact and prepare information on museum collections.
  • Schedule and participate in consultation meetings with tribal representatives.
  • Scan documents, slides, and photographs.
  • Organize and move collections, including library and archival as well as anthropological.
  • Work with Collection Managers, Curators, and other professionals to interpret field notes and other archival documentation necessary for consultation.
  • Utilize Microsoft applications to organize information regarding the collection.
  • Prepare cultural material for transfer.
  • Sort, file, and maintain records, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Assist in the creation of text for reports, policy, documentation, and correspondence.
  • All other duties as assigned.
