Description
The Learning Strategy Officer supports the development and implementation of broad strategic plans for learning and engagement initiatives within the Service & Engagement department. Support the educational and programmatic work done by colleagues within the department and throughout the museum. Develop and maintain internal and external relationships to support departmental goals relating to community engagement, content development, and programmatic evaluation and improvement. Support identification of funding opportunities aligned with overarching strategic plans; Develop learning and engagement projects and initiatives, grant-funded and otherwise. Strategize with a variety of colleagues to champion, promote, and sell programs, events, and initiatives, with a focus on expanding reach and impact into traditionally under-represented areas.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or related field required and at least three years’ experience working in an educational or museum setting). Must have experience with content development and evaluation, be creative and articulate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Must possess: excellent problem-solving, organizational, multitasking, and decision-making skills; an innate collaborative spirit and desire to work cross-departmentally to maximize program impact and efficiency; effective communication skills; focused attention to detail and highly developed customer relations attitude and competencies; interpersonal as well as strong writing and presentation skills.
Demonstrates moderate to advanced skills in the Microsoft suite and the Adobe Suite. Must have and reliable transportation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work will be a mixture of solo administrative, public-facing, and collaborative. Some sedentary work and some work will require movement throughout the museum. Occasional travel may be required. Typical work week will be Monday-Friday, but occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work will align with programs and initiatives.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
LEADERSHIP
- Design, develop, implement, and update departmental strategy relating to learning and engagement. Work collaboratively with department heads, program managers, and educators to support program creation that is aligned with overarching strategies.
- Support and implement initiatives that foster a “culture of evaluation” within the department. Work with colleagues in all areas, supporting analysis of program satisfaction and educational assessment. Engage and work closely with outside evaluators when appropriate, to collect data across all departmental programs for evaluation, and assist in implementation of evaluative instruments.
- Support the development of strategies and implementation protocols to increase student engagement across all programs in the Service & Engagement Department with priority to students underrepresented in STEM fields and students and educators from low income or underserved districts.
PROGRAMMATIC
- Support program continuity and coordination within the department. Consult with and coordinate with members of other departments to ensure continuity and coordination and efficiencies throughout museum programming, events, and activities.
- Assist in development of methods and norms for developing exceptional content, effectively researching science and educational material, designing and iterating programs, identifying and engaging relevant experts—all of which aims at effectively and efficiently creating high quality programs and engagements.
- Work with various colleagues in the development of new or evolution of existing programming to ensure on-going innovation, relevancy, and alignment with programmatic and educational goals.
- Support the Associate Director and other programmatic staff with grant implementation to ensure high-quality, timely outcomes and deliverables as described in funding awards. Assist with document completion of all required deliverables as outlined by funders’ grant and sponsorship requirements. Support programmatic and development personnel in identifying and preparing funding proposals for new and ongoing initiatives and projects. Play a lead role in developing and implementing programs aimed at engaging members of the formal education community. Including but not limited to teacher focus and advisory groups, educator events, curriculum symposia, etc.
- Design, develop and implement internal training programs related to educational content, engagement practices, curriculum standards, etc.
- Play a lead role in convening cross-departmental content and programmatic groups with the goals of increased efficiency, co-creation, high quality content and world class guest experiences.
COLLABORATIVE
- Establish and/or maintain positive relations with schools, peer institutions, educational institutions, and professional organizations, to further the educational and community engagement priorities of the organization.
- Assist departmental personnel with outreach efforts to underserved schools and communities to diversify and increase student participation.
- Explore and develop intra- and interdepartmental collaborative opportunities that integrate content, utilizing exhibit galleries/exhibitions, theaters, etc. to maximize efficiencies and impact of public programming across the museum. Identify opportunities to develop collaborative programming opportunities with the other components of Carnegie Museums (CM and other local, regional, and national cultural entities.
GENERAL OFFICER-LEVEL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Actively seek professional growth opportunities and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, techniques, and applications within both the science/technology field and the museum field to grow professionally and to ensure the highest-quality experience for visitors at CSC. Share knowledge with team members across the organization and serve as a coach and mentor whenever possible.
- When required, serve as the face of CSC, representing the organization in meetings, programs, and events involving external partners and stakeholders. Act as a champion for CSC, promoting and ensuring widespread and accurate knowledge of CSC’s vision, mission and activities; demonstrate a commitment to CSC values at all times.
- At all times, uphold CSC’s Four Keys of Operation: Safety, Courtesy, The Experience, and Efficiency; interact with all colleagues in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with CMP Core Competencies and CSC Community Norms.
- Serve at all times as an exemplary advocate for and model of Carnegie Science Center’s values and policies related to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion, and act in accordance with the organization’s strategic vision.
- Intentionally look for and foster opportunities to collaborate with other CSC departments and/or CM components to eliminate programmatic silos and create a holistic visitor experience.
- Provide “front line” support, as needed, over the course of the year during times of peak visitation (e.g. holidays, special events, STEM competitions, etc.)
- Perform other activities as required.
